Emler Swim School

about us

emler philosophy

Children cannot learn if they are not happy – so Emler is all about students having a great time while become skilled at swimming!

Emler provides a non-threatening and nurturing environment, full of creative teaching methods to ensure that every student is comfortable and confident in the water.

There are few age barriers in the lifesaving sport of swimming. Emler students range from 6 months to 100 years old.

Because effective learning and safety requires ongoing reinforcement and repetition, we encourage once weekly swim lessons year round. Educators have proven that this intermittent schedule of learning causes permanent retention of skills.

Our first recommendation is for your child to continue lessons until he or she is able to swim 40 feet while taking several independent breaths. This ability would indicate s/he has minimal safety skills.

Our second recommendation is for your child to complete the top levels of Emler swim lessons so that s/he can perform the four competitive swim strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Seventeen levels of instruction are found in our award-winning curriculum, SwimScript ©. We constantly update our curriculum with new techniques and safety skills, keeping Emler on the cutting edge of aquatic education for all swimmers.

our use of M&M’s

Emler has been using M&M candies as positive reinforcement in swim lessons since the school opened in 1975.

While beginning students only consume about seven pieces of candy per lesson, the positive reinforcement of M&M’s quickly rewards our students for doing a skill correctly, thereby increasing the possibility that they will repeat that correct skill again.

Emler believes in positive reinforcement, and utilizes many different types of encouragement along with the M&M’s, including:

  • Smiles
  • Verbal Praise
  • Hugs
  • Clapping
  • High Fives
  • Prizes

If your child is allergic to chocolate, we are happy to replace the M&M’s with Skittles
